During
the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
the Office of Indian Affairs (OIA) made many attempts to educate
Native Americans in American culture.
The Office established schools on reservations, in and
around the military forts near the reservations, and in some
cases, Indian students were sent to all white schools off the
reservation. This
integration took its toll on many Native Americans through
assimilation, for OIA policy was to get rid of traditional
Native American culture.
